Galway-based Moonfish Theatre present the critically-acclaimed, sell-out success Star of the Sea on tour in the US this fall and appearing as part of the UMass Fine Arts Center’s 2017-18 season. Performed in Irish and English, audiences are invited to experience Irish as a theatrical language, translated continuously through subtitles, movement and song – completely accessible to non-Irish speakers. There will be a Q & A with the company after each performance.
Based on Joseph O’Connor‘s epic best-selling novel, this story of love, murder, revenge and forgiveness in the time of the Famine strikes a timely note. Star of the Sea was a sell-out hit at the Galway International Arts Festival 2014, which was followed by a packed tour across Ireland in 2015.
To highlight the Amherst connection to Star of the Sea, an online exhibit will be available on September 25th at fineartscenter.com/moonfish. The exhibit will include information on Margaret Maher, Emily Dickinson’s maid, whose family emigrated from Ireland in 1856 and who some scholars identify as impacting the poet’s unique approach to language. Also appearing in the Bowker lobby on the nights of the performance, the exhibit will also explore how the Irish famine ships can help us understand contemporary refugee crises.
