Ellen’s Boys – A True Repertory Theatre Production, returns to the Irish Cultural Centre for three shows on November 14-15.  Set on the top floor of a Dorchester triple decker in 1965, the play centers around Ellen Flaherty, an immigrant, widowed mother of six, three girls and three boys, who raised her family with a strong hand in the bosom of the Irish community during the tumultuous 60s.  Written by playwright Jim Sullivan of Braintree, Ellen’s Boys is a brilliant depiction of a family held together by their love for one another and a sense of humor.

Lyric Stage Company of Boston presents A Sherlock Carol by Mark Shanahan, November 14 through December 21.  It’s a fantastical Yuletide detective story in which a grown-up Tiny Tim asks Sherlock Holmes to investigate the death of Ebenezer Scrooge!  The six actors who take on the beloved characters of authors Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Dickens, transform before your eyes in a playful, clever, and joyous holiday comedy that is “elementary” for a festive outing sure to delight audiences of all ages. Director Ilyse Robbins calls it “the smartest and wittiest mash-up you can imagine. With a killer cast.”

The Greater Boston Stage Company in Stoneham presents An Irish Carol, December 5-21.  This heartfelt comedy by playwright Matthew Keenan pays tribute to Charles Dickens’ classic, but with an Irish twist. It’s Christmas Eve at David’s cozy pub in Dublin, Ireland, and the ghosts of Christmas past are finally catching up with him. Having lost touch with his humanity in the interest of self-protection and material success, David is suddenly challenged by a voice from the past. Infused with Irish wit and warmth, An Irish Carol reminds us that it’s never too late for a life to change.

Penelope runs at the Lyric Stage of Boston from February 6 through March 1, 2026. Based on the epic Greek tale of Odysseus, Penelope is told from his wife’s viewpoint as she waits for the return of her husband, who is off fighting a seemingly endless war.  A generous glass of bourbon, and 90 minutes is all Penelope needs to tell her side of the story.  Directed by Courtney O’Connor and staring actress Aimee Doherty, Penelope embraces her heartache, loneliness and resolve, while sharing a captivating range of emotions that are heightened by a five-piece band playing jazz, folk and indie rock.
