Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands

Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands represents a beautifully unspoiled part of Ireland knitted together by the majestic Shannon River and its scenic tributaries and waterways. The 224 mile Shannon, the island’s largest river, has countless recreational opportunities, from swimming and fishing to kayaking, canoeing and river cruising, where you get to see the natural wonders of Ireland’s interior.
Lough Derg, Ireland’s second largest lake, encompasses Counties Clare, Tipperary and Galway. Picturesque lakeside towns include Killaloe, Scariff and Mountshannon in County Clare and Portumna in County Galway.

The Tipperary side of Lough Derg includes Ballina, Garrykennedy, Dromineer, Coolbaun, and Terryglass, perfect for summer activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, relaxing and dining. Nearby, the town of Nenagh offers historic sites such as Nenagh Castle, and a bustling shopping district along with amazing pubs and restaurants.

For hikers, the Lough Derg Way, from Limerick City to Dromineer, takes you through forests, hidden coves and rolling hills.
