In May, Congressman Stephen F. Lynch of the MA 8th Congressional District was honored by Massport Authority with the 2022 Maritime Champion award for his lifelong advocacy of maritime activities in the Port of Boston and Boston Harbor, and for his support for small businesses along the waterfront and the men and women who work on the docks.
The award was presented to Lynch at the opening of the cruise ship season at Flynn Cruiseport in South Boston’s Seaport District. Massport CEO Lisa Wieland praised the Congressman as a steadfast partner to the working port and Massport. Lynch helped the Authority secure federal funding for the Boston Harbor Dredging project, which benefits all ships navigating Boston Harbor and allows the port to remain competitive. He also supported major improvements at Conley Terminal, enhancements at Flynn Cruiseport Boston, and the growth of seafood processing in South Boston.

Lynch, a former iron worker before he ran for office, was part of a crew that installed the cranes at Conley Terminal more than 30 years ago.
“It’s an honor to receive Massport’s second Maritime Champion award,” said Congressman Lynch. “Both my grandfathers worked in the Port of Boston, so when I ended up working at Conley Terminal, it seemed like a family tradition. I am grateful for this award, and I look forward to continuing to work on behalf of our longshoremen, fishermen, ship fitters, masters, mates and pilots, and all the import/export businesses that rely upon Massport and the Port of Boston.”
Flynn Cruiseport Boston is named in honor of former Boston Mayor and U.S. Ambassador Ray Flynn, whose family also worked as longshoremen in South Boston. His son, Boston City Council President Ed Flynn, also attended the ceremony and praised Congressman Lynch for his lifelong service to the people of Massachusetts.
