Consul General of Ireland Fionnuala Quinlan was an active representative of the Irish government this spring at various 1916 Easter Rising commemorations taking place in New England.
On April 24, Easter Monday, Quinlan spoke at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton, and that same day her op ed piece, US, Ireland Share Patriots’ Legacy, appeared in the Boston Herald.
On April 28, Quinlan attended a reading of the Easter Proclamation at the Massachusetts Senate Chambers. She was escorted to the rostrum by the Sergeant at Arms and the Boston Police Gaelic Column of Pipes and Drums. She briefly addressed the Chamber about the significance of the Rising.
On Sunday, May 16, Quinlan attended the 1916 Garden of Remembrance ceremony in Springfield along with US Congressman Richard Neal and Irish leaders from western Massachusetts.
“Irish patriots were inspired by the example of the 1776 revolution. They drew from the American Declaration of Independence and America provided rescue for those who were persecuted,” Quinlan said.
