TED KULIK
TALKING ABOUT HISTORY
Ted Kulik is one of Boston’s popular tour guides, leading groups of tourists or school children through the city’s illustrious history, from the Revolutionary War and the Civil War to Irish heritage and the Kennedy Family. We spoke with Ted recently about his work.
Tell us about your background?
I’m from Connecticut. I have been in Boston since 1981 when I began at Northeastern University. I studied History and Sociology at Northeastern and in graduate school, I studied Public Policy at UMass Boston.
How did you get into the tour guide business and how long have you been doing it?
I began working in tourism eight years ago after being certified by The International Tour Management Institute in San Francisco. My fascination with abolition and Civil War politics led me to create the Boston Civil War Tour. I have also had the opportunity to manage the Kennedy Tour. I enjoy giving tours of Harvard Yard and my tour of the revolution in Boston focuses on the common people of Boston, as well as the great revolutionary heroes.
What are typical questions tourists ask you about Boston and about the city’s Irish history?
On the Kennedy Tour and the Irish Heritage Tour, I am often asked about ethnic politics in Boston today and how much things have changed. Questions about health care come up on the Kennedy Tour, and about immigration on the Irish Heritage Trail. On the Civil War Tour I am often asked what drove the desire to maintain the Union? Also, where did the churches stand on the issue of slavery and when did slavery end in Massachusetts?
Thank you Ted!
