DERRY / LONDONDERRY
In 2013 the City of Derry/Londonderry in Northern Ireland is celebrating its role as the United Kingdom’s City of Culture. This historic city, with its illuminated Peace Bridge and fortress walls, overlooks the Foyle River and provides a beautiful setting for sightseers. Derry/Londonderry also boasts a dynamic array of restaurants, pubs and shops, and it is full of history and culture.
One of the major events on June 7-9 is The Return of Colmcille, an outdoor spectacle written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce, who wrote last summer’s Olympic opening ceremonies in London. Colmcille is described as a warrior monk also known as St. Columba, who set up his first monastery on the site that is now Derry/Londonderry back in the 6th century.
“Referencing Derry/London-derry’s rich heritage and past but very much rooted in the present, The Return of Colmcille is a story told by the people and will involve a cast of hundreds in the telling,” said Cottrell-Boyce. “It’s going to be an amazing event.”
