LOGAN AIRPORT MODERNIZES TERMINAL E
FOR INTERNATIONAL TRAVELER

Boston’s Logan International Airport hit a major milestone, thanks to significant improvements and the modernization of Terminal E, the airport’s international gateway, with an iconic red roof. This fall, Massport leaders and public officials gathered to celebrate the completion of these upgrades, which began in 2019, making a more efficient, secure, comfortable and enjoyable experience for international travelers.

The biggest enhancement is the addition of four new gates, giving Terminal E a total of 16 gates to serve international destinations across 30 countries on four continents. Other upgrades include a new, state-of-the-art TSA 7-lane security checkpoint, an expanded ticketing area and enhanced baggage claim capacity. Once through the new checkpoint, passengers enter a beautiful open space with high ceilings drenched in natural light, where they can enjoy a variety of retail and food concessions, state-of-the-art departure lounges and a new airline club on the fourth level.

LOGAN 100 EXHIBIT

The completion of the Terminal E project coincides with the centennial of the airport, which opened in September 1923 as a facility for military planes. Logan Airport, which began as a small field with two runways, is now a world-class transportation hub with more than 120 nonstop destinations, providing travelers and businesses with a gateway to tourism and trade around the world.

Logan 100 Exhibit at Terminal E

Massport’s new exhibit, titled “Logan 100,” located pre-security in the Modernized Terminal E, charts the airport’s evolution, advancements in aviation and the increased demand for commercial flights over the century. In partnership with The Boston Globe, the exhibit includes a series of videos and archival photography exploring the airport’s historic moments, impressive innovations and highlighting some famous figures who have traveled through the airport, including Amelia Earhart’s famous visit to the airport in 1933.

In 1956, the airport was named in honor of General Edward L. Logan (1875-1939), a first generation Irish- American, military leader, civic leader and municipal judge with family roots in Ballygar, Co. Galway and South Boston. A statue honoring Logan posthumously was created by sculptor Joseph Coletti and unveiled at the airport on May 20, 1956.

In 2019, international travelers to Massachusetts spent $4 billion and contributed $250 million in state and local taxes.
