BC HONORS SÉAMUS
One of the world’s great Irish fiddlers is the subject of a special exhibit at the John J. Burns Library at Boston College this spring, entitled, The Musical Roots of Séamus Connolly, Sullivan Artist in Residence.
The exhibit runs through May 23, 2013 and examines the music, research and compositions of Connolly, a native of Killaloe, County Clare, who is director of the college’s Gaelic Roots program, which looks at traditional Irish music and dance from an academic, research, and live performance perspective.
Since 1991, Connolly had brought to BC a wealth of famed Irish musicians, singers and dancers. He ran the successful Gaelic Roots Summer School for a decade, and helped build the Irish Music Archives at the Burns Library along with curator Elizabeth Sweeney and others. Winner of ten All-Ireland fiddle championships, Séamus is finishing up a book/CD entitled Music: My Life, to feature 300 Irish traditional tunes he has collected over the decades of field recordings, performed by some of the best Irish musicians today.
